The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), the National Centre for Culture Poland and the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music together with the Ludwig van Beethoven Association invite you to a unique project implemented as part of the cultural programme of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. The European Union Youth Orchestra, made up of outstanding young musicians from 27 EU Member States, will present the monumental Symphony No. 2 in C minor ‘Resurrection’ by Gustav Mahler, one of the primary inspirations of which was Adam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve.
The Polish tour will include two concerts: on 8 April 2025 at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice and on 9 April at the Warsaw Philharmonic. The EUYO will perform with the Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra and the Polish National Youth Choir under Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki, featuring two soloists: Heidi Stober (soprano) and Małgorzata Walewska (mezzo-soprano). On stage, there will be about 200 performers. The concerts will be preceded by a ten-day artistic residency of the EUYO at the European Centre for Music in Lusławice, during which the musicians will hone the performance of the piece.
The European Union Youth Orchestra is an unparalleled ambassador of European values and culture and a symbol of the highest artistic quality and cooperation across borders. The orchestra brings together the best young musicians from 27 EU Member States, winners of prestigious awards, who perform in renowned concert halls around the world and cooperate with outstanding conductors and soloists. Since the beginning of its existence, that is since 1976, 4,000 musicians have participated in this initiative, many of whom currently play in the world’s leading orchestras.
The EUYO concerts in Poland, prepared during the preceding ten-day artistic residency in Lusławice, will be a unique symbol of the European community, in line with the assumptions of the national cultural programme of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, coordinated by the National Centre for Culture Poland in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. One of its priorities is to support and promote young talents. The EUYO concerts are not only artistic events, but also a symbol of European cooperation.
The Polish Presidency in the field of culture focuses on two priorities: supporting young creators and artists as the future of European culture and introducing modern regulations for the audiovisual sector. All the planned events and activities will manifest the main ideas and objectives of the Presidency and complement the events and projects implemented in other areas. The national cultural programme will be a story of solidarity – building a community connecting generations, environments and nations; international and intergenerational cooperation; innovation; supporting young artists, giving them space to be active, diverse and open.
The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage is responsible for coordinating the cultural programme and activities in the field of culture during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. In addition to the events and projects implemented in Poland by the National Centre for Culture Poland and abroad by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage allocated PLN 32 million to grant programmes supporting the organisation of events under the presidency.
