Next to its fundamental artistic and aesthetic properties and functions, perceived as entirely intrinsic and thus developed only through experience that it itself calls into existence, art also serves multiple social purposes. Among the latter, a set of interconnected cognitive, educational and adaptive roles seems to come to the foreground. This article discusses forms in which these functions manifest themselves along with their mutual relationships that may be observed in the field of progressive avant-garde art. It focuses on selected phenomena in the art of experimental cinema, analogue and digital synthesis, as well as contemporary artistic forms that use the techniques of augmented reality and biotechnology, producing a myriad of diversified hybrid constructs.

Key words: media art, new media art, art & science, adaptive function of art, cognitive function of art, educational function of art

This article discusses the role of research and academic knowledge in the field of practices that form cultural education in Poland. Cultural education is shown here as a practice strongly embedded in the processes of socio-cultural reproduction and a space structured by the mechanisms of the post-1989 transformation of Poland. Reluctance to an in-depth diagnosis of local communities, ‘offertism’ (production of cultural events for everyone), ghost viewers are just a few most problematic features of contemporary cultural education in Poland, as revealed by studies conducted since 2016. From the first programmes of Polish culture animation, surveys and reports on cultural education to the use of research in practice, the component of knowledge in cultural education is analysed and recognised for its dialectic (based on theory and practice) and critical nature (based on the reflexivity of transformative practice). Moreover, the analysis leads also to questions about the transformative nature of action research and its actual political impact.

Key words: cultural education, transformation, diagnosis of local communities, transitology, action research

This article is an attempt at an analysis of digital archiving as a process of forming a community of practice. Such community has coalesced around the ELMCIP Knowledge Base developed by the University of Bergen. It is seen not only as a shift in academic pedagogies, where boundaries between professors and students become blurred, but also as a strategy of the humanities aimed at reclaiming the knowledge work in the age of a novel, ‘cool’ and ubiquitous innovation. The latter is often presented as a goal in itself contributing to fundamental digital disruption, supposedly reorganising society and culture at large. Moreover, establishing such communities of practice is seen as a crucial factor to safeguard the sustainability of digital archives that extends beyond purely infrastructural and technical circumstances.

Key words: digital archives, archiving, electronic literature, digital humanities, ELMCIP Knowledge Base

This article proposes a model of urban space research that is related to processes of consultation and participation, and thus leads to changes. The author refers here to new concepts of knowledge about the city and urban competences, such as Colin McFarlane’s proposal of learning the city. Based on the analysis (adopting the perspective of critical urban studies) of an example of a city centre revitalisation project (Project CENTRE in Poznań), the text calls for changing the research model (scientific, scientific-participatory, diagnostic, consultative), so that it enables the acquisition of anticipatory knowledge through a collaborative process. Anticipatory knowledge is here understood as the knowledge that can be applied not only to address the status quo (conflicts over the rights to the city, economic and demographic conditions), but also to predict and thus consider changes in the future (for example climate change). Learning encompasses the processual, embodied and situated nature of knowledge about the city, which is necessary in today’s conditions of urbanised environment and its ongoing transformation. As such it turns into a political concept where to have the knowledge of the city (finally recognised as a living environment) means to know how to ensure that city management conditions are more just and fair.

Key words: urban learning, research as learning, revitalisation, critical urban studies, educational turn in scientific research

This article offers an introduction to the complex area of media art laboratories which emerged along with the development of the art of new technologies. They came as a response to the need to search for new methods of cooperation that transgresses beyond disciplines, and to explore the potential of the previously impossible encounters of the world of art with the world of science. The art of new media has developed a completely different model of functioning in the world of art, enriching traditional exhibition practices which now include new educational and research formats. The primary aim of this text is to present a critical reflection on the role of contemporary media art laboratories. While analysing selected examples from the past, the author asks questions about the current challenges faced by art as a laboratory whose main task is to study reality and social relations, also in terms of contemporary culture and its technological aspects.

Audience development, or building and developing ongoing relationships with audiences of cultural events, is a quite new perspective in the Polish context. It assumes a permanent dialogue with one’s audience in order to study and diagnose its needs as well as to provide for a greater diversification and a deeper exploration of the very term ‘audience’ along with its interpretation. In Poland many examples may be found of different types of cultural and artistic activity, both institutional and less formal, which try to encourage people in urban and rural areas to be more engaged in community practices. Cultural institutions and places continue to evolve as their environment changes and new paradigms of ‘participation in culture’
are developed. In order to include new groups of viewers – non-professionals whose symbolic/cultural resources might prove insufficient to decode certain works of art – it is necessary to offer them a new language and a programme that will accommodate for new problems and topics. This article presents a critical discussion of ‘audience building/development’, while pointing to differences and similarities between this concept and the idea of neo-institutionalism.

Key words: audience, audience research, audience development, neo-institutionalism

This article attempts to look at educational turn in art and its possible consequences from the perspective of contemporary female visual artists. What types of practices will be affected by educational turn? Which entities will actually benefit from it? Basing largely on her own research (in-depth interviews with female artists), the author analyses the artists’ attitudes to educational activities, which they either undertake or reject, and with respect to changes occurring in institutions of modern art that tend to be increasingly more focused on production of knowledge. Seeking to find answers to questions about the relationship between educational and artistic practices, the article also ponders on the feminisation of the sector of art and the visibility of women’s work in it.

Key words: feminisation of art field, educational work of female artists, visibility, production of knowledge, art institutions

The aim of this article is to analyse the concept of educational turn and its impact on everyday museum practices. It seeks to explore whether educational turn can effectively change the relations of power in a museum. The text studies how such model of comprehending and producing art affects the relationship between curators and educators. The discussion of problems related to the implementation of projects reveals that the chances for developing alternative, mainly dialogue-based, ways of producing knowledge in a museum are higher once the experience and competence of curators and educators are combined.

Key words: educational turn, museum, museum educator, museum education, curator

This article attempts to define a new field of creative practice: theatre pedagogy. Operating at the intersection of education and theatre, it is a new sphere that combines artistic activity with promoting culture. The author outlines the framework of practice in Polish theatre pedagogy, referring both to its Polish precursors and places (sources) where 21st-century theatre pedagogues can look for knowledge and practical inspiration. So far not many articles have been published that would address this topic. However, as the idea continues to spread in Poland, it is high time to fill this gap by studying this phenomenon more thoroughly.

Key words: theatre pedagogy, audience development, education through art, more than a viewer, creative activity of the audience

Changes in the area of museum education take multiple directions. While some of them are a result of discussion on transformations observed in social life and their impact on the shape and role of contemporary museums, others may be related to growing numbers of museum visitors recruiting from ever wider circles of people. Irrespective of the causes behind this metamorphosis of education offered by museums, many of these institutions simply ask: Who and what are museums for nowadays? ‘A Multitude of Realities’ is an experimental research and educational project of the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek which has already provided a lot of material to answer these two questions.

Key words: museum education, visual education, potential audience, local community, performative tools

Contemporary reality brings an abundance of changes. Some of them may be also observed with respect to forms of participation in culture. New models arise which follow the ideas of deinstitutionalisation, privatisation and self-sufficiency of viewers of culture. On the basis of these transformations, non-institutional actors appear who enter the role of educators, such as for example culture bloggers. Their activity features characteristics typical of educational turn in culture. They play a significant role in shaping cultural capital, while education remains an immanent quality of blogging about culture.

Key words: bloggers, self-sufficiency, (non-)participation, deinstitutionalisation
